The Joys of Geometrics

Today we are celebrating Vintage Thingies Thursdays@ Coloradolady please stop by and link here with the other blogs participating there.

I think one of the most whimsical and joyful patterns of Quimper are the geometrics.

The geometrics patterns have been found as early as the mid-1800's. They were rarely signed and the backs sometimes showed the 3 prong marks of the kiln seats, and were sometimes unglazed, such as with this simple plate.

Later in the 1930's they became more sophisticated in styling and pattern. The most colorful in my collection is this lovely floral plate marked HR Quimper.

Many patterns of florals outlined with rings and borders, sprays and graphic patterned balls.

My favorite plates are the ones called "sun plates" with a very obvious sun face in the middle. Some faces are happy, dubious, sad or enigmatic.

The tennis ball pattern, seen in some of the biberons posted last week, is also prevelant with pitchers.

A very nice pitcher by Henriot Quimper has lots of blues and yellows,

whereas another marked Henriot Quimper France is full of sunny yellows.

One of my most wonderful finds on eBay was this striking tall geometric pitcher. I found out it was being offered by someone I knew (but I did not know their sellers name)!

These two charming creamers have lots of petterns and colors and are a delight to use on Sunday mornings or tea with friends.

So, you can see there are a variety of patterns, colors, and styles of geometrics, all of which make me smile!

Happy VTT,

Melissa B

  7. Thanks, I'm really enjoying learning about Quimper. I have some postcards from Quimper, but didn't know anything about the pottery.

  8. Melissa, loved seeing your group of geometrics. You have a wonderful collection in this decor. My favorite is the sun face. I have one of these and have always wanted to add more. I remember seeing Sandra's collection, and I knew I wanted something in this motif. Sorry I didn't get my pieces photographed to send to you. My day got away from me. Too much on my plate till the meeting is over. LOL
    See you next week....
